Baby Fish Mouth is Sweeping the Nation

I never played with dolls as a little girl.  I had a Baby Alive once for about 20 minutes, but after the novelty of watching her poop fake baby food wore off, I amused myself by cutting up my socks to sew clothes for her.

So baby dolls as a toy for a little girl is something that doesn't really occur to me.  I don't have a problem with it.  I just don't really get it.

So color me surprised when Josie all of a sudden became totally obsessed with this doll in her classroom at school.  Like, sits and plays with it all day.  Calls it "Mimi" or "Bibi".  Won't let it go when J picks her up in the afternoon, so the school lets her takes it home.  She sits with it on the couch and gives it hugs and giggles.

Which is all very well and good and cute.  Except that this is what the doll looks like:

What the fuck?

  1. I loved dolls when I was little and when I was 4 I begged Santa (and my mom) for a "bald-headed" baby doll, meaning I wanted a doll that looked like a real baby. The one I got looked an awful lot like this one and it smelled like baby powder. I still have that doll and my boys occasionally play with it as a stand in for "Big Baby" from Toy Story 3.

The doll itself isn't creepy, but the iguana/dinosaur/scaled monster costume makes it pretty weird looking, I think.

Of course, maybe Josie is trying to tell you she wants a baby sister of her own. ; ) (I say, ducking.)

  2. I tried to vote for the "Ken and Barbie Doin' It" choice, but it ended up going to the supportive "Let Little J Be" one.

I thought you should know. (I'm all for Letting Little J Be, but also my Barbie and Ken were Doin' It)

    Mwah

  3. Draw SOMETHING resembling ANYTHING!!!

What is the doll's "given" name?

  4. Can the costume be removed? Perhaps the teacher would cooperate, put some regular clothes on the poor doll, and make you feel better about the entire situation.

  5. "Oh but Baby Fish Mouth is sweeping the nation."

Laughing over dj's comment. God, I love that movie.

I think Josie being attracted to such an unusually dressed doll shows creativity spunk!

  6. Dawn -- I have been informed that the doll is the character "Boo" from Monsters Inc. So at least there's a reason. And if Josie wants a baby sister, Baby Fish Mouth will have to do. ;)

Elizabeth -- I should have known that about you. And of course, I will let her be.

dj -- hahahaha! Let the quotefest begin!

Suz -- in all honesty, it doesn't bother me. I think it's a weird doll, but if she's happy, I'm happy.

Anne -- I agree. I kind of love that she eschewed all the normal looking dolls for this freak.
